Reducing my Energy Consumption at Home

Energy conservation at home has been an ongoing exercise for me for over a year.  With our new heat pump installation slated for this week, I thought that this might be a good time to summarize some changes I have made around my home.

To put this in an appropriate reference of time, when I first started this exercise compact flash bulbs were becoming widespread had started appearing on local store shelves.  There is no doubt that these bulbs reduced energy consumption, but not nearly as well as the new LED bulbs do.  Even as I write this my brain is buzzing with thoughts of swapping out some T8 (4′ flourescent) bulbs at my office for the new T8 LED tubes that are now starting to appear on sites like eBay and Amazon.

Before we go too far down this road let’s take a peek at the energy usage comparing incandescent bulbs to the compact fluorescent ones.

Here is a picture showing the difference between LED (on the left) and standard florescent (on the right).  Granted that the  hue can be replicated with LED, but the white is pure white and makes things feel “cleaner” and more clinical.  I took this picture after replacing a couple of florescent fixtures at my office.
